A little about me.
What inspired you to become a Support Coordinator?
I started working as a support worker at 18 years old and noticed some challenges between my client’s needs and the standards of care that they were receiving. Whilst doing my degree in psychology, I decided I wanted to direct my career in helping NDIS participants through Support Coordination.
How long have you been working in this space, and what do you enjoy most about it?
I have been working in the community space for 8 years – initially as a community swim instructor for children with disabilities, a mental health support worker, an ABA therapy and VB MAPS counsellor, NDIS administration and finally, support coordinator. I love meeting a variety of individuals and enjoy providing a safe space with a solutions oriented response.
What types of support services do you specialise in or have experience with?
I specialise in complex psychosocial disabilities but I have extensive experience with a variety of disabilities.
Can you tell me about a particularly rewarding or memorable experience you’ve had while assisting someone?
One of my favourite client memories was assisting a youth who had been in foster homes his entire life, find and secure a home of his own. The pride this young man felt, having his own space with his very own food was amazing!
Are there any resources or programs you find Interesting and beneficial for alot of your participants?
I think that the NDIS space has some fantastic programs and it’s hard to pick one that would benefit a lot of my participants, because every client I have, has such unique and individual needs!
What do you believe are the most important qualities for a Support Coordinator to have?
Again, I believe every client has their own priorities for qualities in their care team and this is different for everyone. Some of mine that I value are that I am consistent, reliable, knowledgeable, but most importantly, I believe I am empathetic.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any hobbies or interests you’d like to share?
I love exploring the different events/community gatherings Brisbane has to offer! I also love spending time with my family, reading a good book and spending time outside.
